Fixing Composite Decking Issues in Tamarin: Warping, Fading & Loose Fixings

Composite decking is a sensible choice for many Tamarin villas and resort terraces: it avoids routine oiling and gives a consistent timber-look finish around pools, gardens and outdoor dining areas. But composite boards still need correct installation and care. Intense sun, heavy rain, humidity, salt air and trapped heat can expose problems that are easy to miss until a board starts moving underfoot.

Here is how to diagnose the most common issues on a Mauritius west coast deck before deciding whether a repair or replacement is needed.

Warped or raised boards

A board that curls at the ends or lifts along its length may have inadequate expansion gaps, blocked ventilation or fixings that are too tight. Check whether dirt has collected between the boards and make sure the joist structure is not holding water. Do not force a hot board flat or add random screws through its face: that can restrict movement and make the damage worse.

For a small isolated lift, a decking specialist can often release and refit the board with the correct clips and spacing. If several boards are moving, inspect the subframe, joist spacing and drainage beneath the deck. Fading and patchy colour

Some colour change is normal as composite weathers in strong tropical sunlight. Patchy fading, however, can be caused by furniture, planters, rugs, sunscreen or standing water. Move objects regularly, sweep debris away and wash spills promptly with warm water and a soft brush. Avoid solvents, abrasive pads and strong bleach, which can leave a permanent light mark.

Where the original colour has changed evenly, coating the boards is rarely the best answer. Clean the surface and accept the stable weathered tone, or replace boards in a visible zone so the new material forms a deliberate border or feature. Always test a cleaning product on an inconspicuous area first.

Loose fixings and squeaks

Loose clips, missing screws and squeaking often point to movement in the board or subframe. Remove the affected board, replace damaged clips with the manufacturer’s compatible system and check that screws are seated without crushing the board. Never mix random fasteners with hidden clips: different systems allow different amounts of expansion.

On a commercial or frequently rented property, mark repaired boards and inspect them again after heavy rain. A simple maintenance log helps owners spot recurring movement before it becomes a trip hazard or guest complaint.

When to repair or replace

Repair is usually sensible when the frame is sound and the problem is limited to a few accessible boards. Replacement becomes more practical when boards are brittle, water is trapped beneath the deck, the subframe is deteriorated or the same fixing failure keeps returning.
