5 Timber Deck Sanding Mistakes That Damage Tamarin Decks
Sanding is the step that decides whether your timber deck restoration looks professional or patchy. At Tamarin villas and west-coast properties, where sun, humidity and salt accelerate wear, a rushed or incorrect sanding job can do more harm than good. Here are five mistakes we see repeatedly, each one avoidable with the right approach.
1. Starting with too fine a grit
The most common mistake is reaching for 120-grit paper on a badly weathered deck. Fine grit cannot remove old oil residue, embedded grime or raised grain. Instead it clogs quickly, generates heat that can glaze the timber surface, and leaves a finish that looks smooth but absorbs the next oil coat unevenly.
For a weathered merbau or teak deck in Tamarin, start with 40- or 60-grit to strip the old coating and level the surface. Move through 80-grit, then finish at 100- or 120-grit. Coarser grit leaves deeper scratches that the next grade removes. Skipping grades saves minutes but leaves a deck that shows sanding marks under direct sunlight, which Tamarin gets in abundance.
2. Sanding damp timber
On Mauritius' west coast, morning dew and afternoon showers mean timber rarely stays bone dry. Sanding damp boards tears the grain fibres instead of cutting them cleanly. The result is a fuzzy surface that feels rough after the oil dries, and trapped moisture beneath the new coating can cause patchy discolouration within weeks.
Test by pressing a dry cloth against the deck surface for thirty seconds. If it darkens, the timber is too damp. Use the early afternoon window when the sun has dried the surface and there is enough time for the oil to cure before evening dew returns. For covered or shaded areas that stay damp longer, use a heat gun briefly or simply wait an extra day.
3. Over-sanding and rounding board edges
Villa owners often sand aggressively to remove every last stain, wearing down the timber until the sharp edges between boards round off. Rounded edges look uneven and channel water sideways instead of letting it drain through the gaps. Worse, over-sanding thins the board, reducing its structural life and exposing less dense timber beneath the original surface.
Sand to remove the old coating and achieve a uniform surface depth, not to erase every mark. Stubborn stains that survive the final grit are better left for the oil's pigments to mask than sanded into a dip. Keep the sander flat against the board and avoid lifting the machine at the ends, where rounding happens most.
4. Ignoring the gaps between boards
Belt and random orbital sanders only reach the flat surface. The gaps between boards, where debris and old oil accumulate and where most rot begins on coastal decks, get skipped entirely. When you oil over dirty gaps, the coating traps moisture and accelerates the very decay you are trying to prevent.
After machine sanding, use a putty knife or gap scraper to pull out the compressed debris from each board gap. Give the edges a quick hand sand with 80-grit folded into the groove. This step takes ten minutes on a typical Tamarin villa deck but makes a visible difference in how evenly the next oil coat absorbs and how well water drains after rain.
5. Oiling before cleaning off sanding dust
The final mistake is the most costly. Dust left on the deck surface mixes with the oil, creating a gritty, uneven finish that looks cloudy and wears faster than a clean coat. On a wind-exposed Tamarin deck, fine dust resettls between the last pass and the oil application, invisible to a casual glance but obvious once the oil dries.
After sanding, blow or sweep the deck thoroughly, then wipe the surface with a lint-free rag dampened with methylated spirits. The metho lifts residual dust and evaporates quickly without affecting moisture content. Oil within the hour so no further dust settles, and keep the area clear until the coating has cured per the product label.
