How Hot Does Composite Decking Get in Tamarin? Surface Temperature and Barefoot Safety

One of the most common questions we hear from Tamarin villa owners is simple: will the composite deck burn bare feet? In Mauritius, where midday sun pushes air temperatures past 30°C and UV intensity is among the highest in the Indian Ocean, composite decking surfaces can reach temperatures that make poolside walking genuinely uncomfortable. Understanding why, and what you can do about it, matters for any property with children, guests or pool decks.

How hot does composite actually get?

Composite decking absorbs and retains heat differently from timber. On a clear Tamarin afternoon, a dark-coloured composite board in full sun can reach 60°C to 70°C at the surface. Lighter colours run 10 to 15 degrees cooler. For comparison, bare timber in the same conditions typically sits around 45°C to 50°C because the wood grain releases heat more readily.

The key factor is the plastic component of the composite. Polyethylene and PVC blends trap heat at the surface, while boards with higher wood-fibre content tend to run slightly cooler. The difference between brands is real — some premium capped composites read 10 degrees hotter than uncapped equivalents under identical conditions.

Why Tamarin decks run hotter than most

Tamarin's western exposure means decks take direct afternoon sun at the hottest part of the day. Villas at Tamarina Golf Estate and along the coastal road face open sun with minimal cloud cover for much of the year. Reflected heat from pool surrounds, glass balustrades and light-coloured walls bounces back onto the surface, adding several degrees.

Shaded decks stay comfortable, but partial shade creates a temperature gradient across the boards that owners often underestimate. The sun line moves through the afternoon, so a deck that was fine at 2pm may be dangerously hot by 4pm.

How to test your deck surface

You do not need specialist equipment. On a sunny afternoon between 1pm and 3pm, rest the back of your hand on the deck for five seconds. If you cannot hold it there comfortably, the surface is above 50°C and will be unpleasant for barefoot guests. An infrared thermometer gives a precise reading and costs under Rs 1,500 locally.

Test both the sun-exposed and shaded sections. The difference is often 20 degrees or more, which tells you where to direct guests during peak hours.

Practical ways to reduce surface temperature

Choose lighter board colours. Sand, silver-grey and light oak composites run significantly cooler than dark charcoal, walnut or ebony. If you are replanking, this is the single most effective change.

Install shade structures. A retractable awning or pergola over the main traffic area cuts surface temperature by 15 to 25 degrees. Even a simple sail shade over the pool entry point protects children and guests where it matters most. See our expansion gap guide for how shade also reduces buckling risk.

Rinse with water. A quick hose-down at midday drops the surface temperature instantly. For villas with automatic irrigation, a misting line along the deck edge can cycle briefly during peak hours. This is not a permanent solution, but it works for rental turnaround days when guests are arriving.

Use rugs in high-traffic zones. Outdoor polypropylene rugs insulate the surface and stay cool enough for barefoot use. Place them at the pool steps and the dining area where guests naturally gather.

What to do before installation

If you are planning a new composite deck at a Tamarin property, ask for a heat sample. Most suppliers will provide offcuts you can leave in the sun for an afternoon. The test takes ten minutes and prevents a costly mistake — a dark deck that nobody can use at midday is a poor investment for a rental villa.

For existing decks that are already too hot, the fallback options are shade, water and rugs. Re-painting or coating composite to reduce heat absorption is not recommended by manufacturers and may void the warranty.
