Choose the right weather window
Do not start just because the forecast shows one sunny morning. Plan for at least two dry days, with low overnight humidity if possible. Rain trapped in board joints, shaded pool edges or the underside of the deck can delay drying and leave a new oil coat patchy.
Begin early, but stop if dark clouds are building over the west coast. Move furniture, planters and pool equipment away from the work area, and protect nearby walls and glass from dust. A resort or holiday villa should also be scheduled around guest changeovers so the surface has time to cure before foot traffic returns.
Inspect before you sand
Sanding is a finishing operation, not a repair for structural failure. Check for soft timber around stair ends, posts, joists, pool surrounds and places where water sits. Replace loose or split boards, reset proud screws and deal with drainage or ventilation problems first. Near the coast, corroded fixings should be replaced with suitable stainless-steel hardware rather than sanded flat.
Quick test: press a screwdriver into suspect timber. If it sinks easily or the wood crumbles, mark that area for repair instead of trying to hide it with a heavier sanding pass.
A safe sanding sequence
Start with a thorough sweep and a clean using a deck-safe solution. Let the boards dry fully. Use a floor or orbital sander with a sensible grit progression, normally starting around 40–60 grit only where the old coating or raised grain demands it, then moving through 80 grit and finishing around 100 grit for an oil-ready surface. Always sand with the grain and keep the machine moving to avoid dips and swirl marks.
- Work in manageable sections and keep edges under control with an edging tool.
- Do not aggressively thin the board surface to remove every colour variation.
- Vacuum dust from the boards and gaps; do not leave fine powder where it can mix with oil.
- Round sharp splinters and ease board corners, especially on barefoot pool decks.
After sanding: protect the timber
Allow the deck to dry until the timber is clean, pale and moisture-free. Apply a penetrating exterior deck oil suited to tropical hardwood, following the product coverage and recoat instructions. Thin, even coats are safer than flooding the boards. Wipe away excess oil so it does not form a sticky film that traps grit and salt.
In exposed Tamarin locations, inspect the finish more often than a sheltered inland deck. Rinse away salt deposits, keep leaves out of joints and re-oil before the timber becomes completely dry and grey. This small maintenance routine is easier and cheaper than allowing water entry and end-grain rot to spread.
